Travel Assignment #7: Hudson's Bay Company versus North West Company - SMACKDOWN 1821!

Hello Time Traveler,

OK - something big went down in 1760...you need to get me answers - NOW!! Get back to 1760 and let me know what happened.

Our records indicate that there are now two major fur trading companies -the Hudson's Bay Company (HBC) and the North West Company (NWC).

Nowadays I don't hear too much about the NWC anymore but I just purchased a killer pair of shoes at a store called Hudson Bay Company...hmm I wonder what happened??

You need to report back to me what you see.

Don't forget to include:

  • how did the NWC start?
  • where did the NWC operate? (whose trade routes did the NWC take over?)
  • what the heck is a Factor
  • how did the Metis roles in the fur trade change? did the Metis women do anything important?
  • include a map that show where each company operated and where their forts were located
  • which company won the fur trade? how much land did that company end up controlling? when did it happen?
  • what ended the fur trade?
  • what was life in the forts? describe a typical day in the life of one of the forts

Please report back no later than December 18.

Good luck on your mission!

Sincerely,

Mr. Peabody
